Area
of Singapore
The Downtown Area is home to about 37,000 residents and is known
to be one of the oldest housing estates in Singapore. The area has the
highest proportion of residents aged 65 and over, and is one of the
estates with the lowest household income and education level. Higher
instances of fragmented families are found here compared to the
national average; highlighting the existence of a financially and socially
vulnerable community.
The area houses more than half of all licensed moneylending outlets
and over 40% of lottery and sports betting shops in Singapore. It is
strategically located at the centre of six foreign worker enclaves, namely
the Indian, Bangladeshi, Chinese, Filipino, Thai and Burmese foreign
communities. With a rich cultural heritage, many places of worship and
businesses of religious items and rituals can be found here.
