some notes on
fasting
why fast?
Jesus fasted (Matthew 4:2)
Jesus expected us to fast (Matthew 6:17-18)
It was common practice in the Old Testament (1 Samuel 7:6;
Nehemiah 1:4)
The early church fasted (Acts 13:2-3)
Many breakthroughs in human history have been linked to times
of prayer and fasting - see any great story of revival - Luther,
Knox, Wesley, Spurgeon.
To dedicate a time to devote ourselves to God, to listen to God
and align our will with His will
To humble ourselves before God and learn to depend on Him.
(Psalm 35:13, Ezra 8:21)
What is fasting?
Laying down our appetites and allowing God to be in control
(Isaiah 58)
What do we fast from?
From food. This could be fasting from a certain type of food or it
could be fasting one meal a day for several days (or for the whole
40 days).
From a distraction. This could be social media, television, etc.
The time normally spent on these things is then spent with God
instead
Don’t fast from food if you are sick, pregnant, breastfeeding or
have an eating disorder. Check with your doctor if unsure.
