Social Media: Friend or Foe?

A recent CNN report found that teens in the United States spend about nine hours a day using media. If you think about it that is more time than many spend sleeping. Whether through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, or others, our young people today stay connected in ways we never thought possible. However, with this connection it is more important than ever that we teach students how to use social media responsibly. In a recent study, over half of the students surveyed admitted to hiding their online behavior from their parents. Therefore, it is critical we make sure our students know the dangers associated with this type of behavior and understand there are laws protecting people from inappropriate use. In fact, individuals who purposefully Randy Hodges, Superintendent post pictures, information, or videos that are considered injurious can face criminal charges. For adults, it is equally important to serve as the role model for appropriate social media use. Lauderdale County School District sees social media as a valuable tool in communicating information to parents and families. If you haven’ t checked out our website to see our current feeds, I encourage you to do so.( www. lauderdale. k12. ms. us) I also encourage all employees of this district to review our social media policies. It is important for us all to be reminded that the penalty for inappropriate use can ultimately mean loss of employment and licensure. The links are found below. I urge you to spend some time discussing these important issues with your students.
