GET STARTED

STEP 1 :
Pick a spot where you ’ re likely to encounter lots of bugs . Beetles tend to love dark , damp crevices , so remember to look under logs and rocks . Check out cracks in tree bark and dead wood .
STEP 2 :
Record everything you find . You can scribble down your findings , make voice notes , take photographs or draw your ‘ specimens ’. Use a good field guide to try and identify your discoveries .
STEP 3 :
Do you want to pick your bugs up ? Try using a spoon or a paintbrush to scoop them up , but be very gentle with anything you find and please make sure you put all your finds back where you found them .
BEETLES TO LOOK OUT FOR
RHINOCEROS BEETLES ( like Heracross ) – over 1,500 species – these magnificently horned beetles are found on every continent except Antarctica
FIREFLIES ( like Volbeat and Illumise ) – 2,000 species worldwide – these bioluminescent beauties emerge from their hibernation in the spring as glow-worms , then metamorphose into fireflies !
STAG BEETLES ( like Pinsir ) – over 1,200 species worldwide – their mandibles look like the antlers of a stag . Their larvae grow up to 11 cm long and have orange heads and brown jaws .
LADYBIRDS ( like Orbeetle ) – over 5,000 species – they ’ re not all red and black ! Ladybirds can come in yellow , orange and black , and sometimes have stripes instead of spots .
DUNG BEETLES ( like Rellor ) – over 7,000 species – these busy little ball rollers , once sacred to the ancient Egyptians , navigate by the stars .
