SHOWSTOPPERS
Bravo !
POLLY ’ S mISSION
You know when you go to the theatre , and the show ends , and you clap ? You know how that goes on for a reallllly long time ? First the extras come out to bow , so you clap them . Then the supporting cast come out , so you clap them too . Oh and then the main cast come out – the clapping continues . Perhaps they then gesture towards the orchestra pit – cue a thunderous applause for them ! Then the whole entire cast all together bow AGAIN – and there ’ s EVEN MORE clapping , which goes on and on , and you start to wonder if your hands may actually fall off ?! What would be handy here is a pair of hands to do the hard work for you . Let ’ s get crafty and make ourselves some cardboard clapping hands !

GET STARTED
STEP 1 : Grab your piece of stiff cardboard . We used a large stiff cardboard package which already has a fold in the middle . Open up the cardboard so it ’ s flat and , with a pencil , draw a large hand on either side of the fold . Then cut it out .
STEP 2 : When you ’ ve cut out your hands , use a sharp , pointed object and some modelling clay to make three holes . One at the bottom of each middle finger and one in the fold at the centre . o o
YOU WILL NEED
Stiff cardboard Pencil
STEP 3 : Cut a length of string , about 50 cm . Thread it in through the hole in one finger and out through the hole in the other finger . With your clapping
hands in an open position , tape the ends of the string in place . Glue or tape one
2p piece to the top of each middle finger . This will help the mechanism to work .
STEP 4 : Take another length of string , about 70 cm , and thread it up through the hole in the fold , then over the other piece of string , and back through the original hole . When you pull on this string , your hands should clap . You may have to adjust the other string slightly if it doesn ’ t work on the first go .
