Dr . Arthur Fleming served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1983 to 2003 at the Charles R . Drew University of Medicine and Science ( CDU ) and Program Director for the Surgery Residency Program . By the beginning of the 21st Century , fifty percent of underrepresented surgical residents being trained at Historically Black Medical Schools were trained at Drew .
In addition , more underrepresented surgeons were retrained and became board certified at Drew than at any other institution in the U . S . Furthermore , he served as the first Trauma Director and served in this position from 1983 to 1999 . He oversaw over 3,000 major trauma injuries per year or over 50,000 major trauma victims over the 16 years he served as Trauma Director . He also served as a Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon and as Chief of the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery .
Dr . Fleming is an Emeritus Professor of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at CDU . In January 2014 , he was elected President of the CDU Chapter of the American Association of University Professors ( CDUC / AAU ). Dr . Fleming is also Chair of the Academic Senate ’ s Budget and Finance Committee and Chair of the Student Affairs Committee . He is also an existing Legislative Council and Clinical and Community Programs member and serves on the President ’ s Community Advisory Council . He is currently a representative from the College of Medicine on the Dean ’ s Search Committee . In the past , he has represented the College of Medicine by serving on search committees for the President , Interim Provost , and Dean ..
He has been an active member of the National Medical Association for over 30 years , Past President of the Charles R . Drew Medical Society , and is still on its Board of Directors . He is committed to helping others achieve their goals . He lives by the motto , “ To whom much is given , much is expected ”.
