Muster on the Maquoketa

SEPTEMBER 6 – 8 JACKSON COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS ( 1212 E QUARRY ST , MAQUOKETA , IA ) Muster on the Maquoketa is the first annual countywide Civil War Reenactment sponsored by the Jackson County Historical Society . Enjoy and An Evening with General Grant on Sept . 6 , reenactments on Sept . 7 and 8 , and a Supper and Ball on Sept . 7 .
“ Unconditional Surrender : a visit from Ulysses S . Grant ” is a one-man show by historian Pete Grady . It is a humorous and touching portrayal of the life and times of the general who won the Civil War for the Union . During the Supper and Ball , “ Stephen Foster ” will take the stage playing some of his well-known songs . The Swedish Nightingale , “ Jenny Lind ,” follows with several numbers . Local favorites the Black Velvet Band will then finish off the evening playing music from the Civil War Era . Food by Brian Bramer includes baked chicken or pork loin , potato , green beans , roll , and apple crisp or peach cobbler .
Jackson County contributed mightily to the efforts of the Union in the Civil War . In the presidential election in 1860 , Jackson County cast 3,021 votes for president . During the following two years according to the adjutant general ’ s report , the county furnished 1,288 men to put down the rebellion , or upward of 40 % of the population of the county .
