Sowing Iron at Smokestack is an exhibition of contemporary cast iron sculpture shown in collaboration with the Dubuque the Bell Tower Theater stage on July 18 – 27 . This show will be performed by two casts of kids ages 7 to 16 from throughout the area .

Area Arts Collective . Artists began exploring iron casting as a medium for sculpture in the early 1960s in the academic studios of the American Midwest . The communal nature of the process has led to a following , and the inherent beauty of molten iron inspires pour performances and fire-activated installations . Since its founding , the contemporary cast iron art movement has spread from a uniquely regional practice into an international sculptural phenomenon . The artists featured in Sowing Iron reflect the diversity of the iron casting community and the aesthetic possibilities of cast iron as a sculptural medium . On display July 31 – Aug . 23 .
