Source of Power

By Matt Booth
A source of power comes from believing in something bigger than ourselves . Whether we want to admit it or not , we all have a source of power , and I think identifying and understanding them is very important . Often when I ’ m at a speaking engagement , I ’ ll ask the audience to write down their three primary sources of power . Many of them blink back at me and don ’ t understand . I always pause for a moment and then say , “ Let me rephrase it . Your source of power is your WHY . We should all know why we ’ re doing what we ’ re doing .” Without fail , their faces brighten , and a look of understanding dawns . You see , our source of power is why we do what we do . It motivates us and supplies strength and courage in the face of hard times .
My top three sources of power are God , country , and family . These three things are my “ why .” They are why I get up and aim to be better than I was the day prior . If I didn ’ t know my sources of power , I wouldn ’ t be nearly as productive in my daily life . Effective change happens when we tie our “ why ,” AKA our sources of power , to our direction and goals . The stronger our why , the more likely we will accomplish our goals .
How do we refine our why and deeply understand our sources of power ? We ask ourselves the right questions . For example , my buddy “ Jim ” wants to get in better shape . At first , he thinks his motivation comes from wanting to be healthier , look better , feel better , or because his doctor told him he needs to do it . Ultimately , those things aren ’ t motivating enough . After drilling down and asking the deep questions , he realizes his “ why ” is so he can live long enough to be around for his grandkids . Now that ’ s a compelling source of power ! The stronger our why , the better chance we have of connecting to our source of power and truth . At the core of the matter , a source of power means connecting to something bigger than ourselves that fuels us . It ’ s our source of motivation .
So why do I call this “ thing ” a source of power ? I gave it this title because a source of power provides inspiration , hope , steadfastness , and courage . It ’ s genuinely like plugging into a bank of batteries and recharging ourselves after a long , hard day . Our source of power gives us guidelines and directly informs our “ why .” For my buddy Jim , his source of power was his family . The stronger our connection to our sources of power and our “ why ,” the more likely we are to accomplish our goals . What are your sources of power , and are you plugged into them ? •
