Another reason for people to undergo TransPRK surgery is that it is a second chance for some patients to be free from glasses . Laser eye surgeries have become safer , more precise and quicker as time goes by but there can sometimes be limitations and setbacks . In some cases , some individuals may be deemed unsuitable to undergo LASIK due to thin or irregular corneas . TransPRK can be a second chance for these individuals as it is a tissue saving procedure , which preserves the most cornea tissue and biomechanical strength compared to other procedures . SMILE , on the other hand , is unable to treat hyperopia . Besides the above , TransPRK is able to treat patients who have had complications from previous refractive surgeries . Following a TransPRK procedure , the epithelium will heal in approximately 3 to 5 days . While the epithelium is healing , a bandage contact lens protects the cornea and minimizes discomfort . Ophthalmologists will prescribe eye drops to aid the healing process . Like all medical procedures and surgeries , there are risks involved . It is advised that patients do not take surgeries lightly and thus consult registered eye specialists . This is to understand the risks of each treatment , the preparation needed and the steps to recovery .
