In the early hours of 11th July, the 115th Brigade relieved the 113th Brigade in the line at Mametz
Wood. The Brigade was ordered to clear the remainder of Mametz Wood. During this attack the
16th Welsh suffered from machine gun fire and flame throwers, and fell back slightly. A line
through the Wood was held, but was was withdrawn under a German night bombardment.
