(The Battle of Ancre, 1916)
The Battle of Ancre, from the 13th -18th November 1916, was the final large British attack of the
Battle of the Somme. After the Battle of Flers-Courcelette on 22nd September, the Anglo-French
armies tried to press their advantage with several smaller attacks in quick succession, rather than
pause tor egroup and give the German Armies time to recover.
(The Battle of Ancre, 1916)
The attack was the largest in the British Sectors since September and had a 7 day preliminary
bombardment, which was twice as heavy as that of the 1st July. The enemy were surprised and
beaten. Four German divisions had to be relieved due to the number of casualties they suffered and
over 7,000 German troops were taken.
