This book has been written by Jane McLaughlin as a tribute to the 32 men with a
connection to All Saints Church in Penarth who gave their lives for our country during the
Great War of 1914 to 1919.
This book is more than a Roll of Honour, Jane tells us some of each man, their life at home
and how their life on earth came to an end.
Some of the men had just left their boyhood, others older and married with children. Every
man's death caused pain and suffering to their friends and family. Most buried abroad,
family and friends unable to pay their last respects.
These men were from all parts of society, wealthy men and poor, a Lieutenant Colonel and
soldiers of Private rank. They died in all 3 services and across the world. What comes
through is the normality of all, doing jobs many of us still perform now, living in houses we
also still live in. Jane has carefully researched each man and we should be thankful to her
for her dedication and enabling us to view some of the person behind the name.
I know Jane would also like to thank for their assistance, Dr Jonathan Hicks of St Cyres
School, Marcus Payne of the Vale of Glamorgan Library Service and her genealogy group.
War is always fought at a high price, these men paid the ultimate price and it is important
that we remember them, 'We will remember them.'
