Brothers Alexander Rupert, Douglas George and Percival Charles all died in the Great War. Their
father, George died, in 1930. Brother, Ernest Gordon, and, sister, Muriel Alice, are believed to have
lived for many years longer.
Percival Charles Hoult
Percival was born in Penarth in 1898 (brother of Douglas and Rupert). In 1911 he was a farm
labourer and lived at Main Street, Bretfordon, Honeybourne, Worcs with his grandparents Charles
and Esther Tomkins and his brother Ernest Hoult. The 1901 census shows his father George and
brother Douglas living at 59 Grove Terrace Penarth and Percival living with an aunt and uncle.
Percival served in the 75th Brigade, the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery with the
rank of Gunner (service number 13844). He was killed in action on 17th October 1915 when laying
a wire and a shell burst close by. He is buried at I. G. 11., Vermelles British Cemetery.
Rupert A Hoult (Alexander Rupert Hoult)
Rupert was born in Penarth in 1893 (brother of Douglas and Percival). In 1911 he was an
assistant butcher and was boarding with the Prosser family at 34 Windsor Road, Penarth. Rupert
served in Territorial Force./”A” Battery. 331st Brigade, the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field
Artillery with the rank of Gunner (service number 707235). He died on 4th July 1918 of pneumonia
following gas and then suffering from influenza on and is buried at I. D. 38., Terlincthun British
Cemetery, Wimille.
