From the War diaries of the 2nd Battalion South Lancashire Regiment:1st October – Battalion forming part of 7th Infantry Brigade moved about 10.00pm from Augy to
Grand-Rozoy
2nd October – Battalion moved at 10.00am to Beugneux and remained there until 8.30pm when it
moved back to Grand-Rozoy and joined the brigade. Brigade moved to Noroy.
6th October – Battalion left for unknown destination.
7th October – Arrived Rue about midnight, moved into bivouac about 3.00am. Moved at 9.30am to
Ouville.
8th October – Battalion left Ouville about midnight and joined Brigade. March continued to
Regeauville, arriving about 5.00am on the 9th.
9th October – Brigade moved by motor lorries to Pernes, arriving between 2.00am and 5.30am the
following day.
10th October – Marched from Regneauville about 5pm 9th October, arriving Pernes about 3pm
10th October – A hard and trying march completed without casualty.
11th October – 3rd Division continued advance N.E. direction. Battalion moved off about 9.30am.
Arrived at Hinges about 7.00pm
12th October – Battalion forming part of an advanced guard left Hinges about 7.00am By evening
the Battalion had taken up an entrenched position in vicinity of Lacoutre, having come into contact
with the enemy.
13th October – Advance made to vicinity of Richebourg where Battalion entrenched in vicinity of
St. Vaast. Very wet day : casualties slight.
14th October – General Hamilton killed between Richebourg and Lacoutre. Was buried at night at
Lacoutre Church. During the ceremony the firing along the whole line was exceptionally heavy.
Reinforcement of about 140 other Ranks under Lieut. Gibson, 3rd Battalion, and 2nd Lieuts S.H.
Taylor and C.J. Walsley 3rd Y & L Regt. arrived at Lacoutre but did not join the Battalion. Slight
advance made.
