The Mercantile Marine Memorial in London was erected in 1928. George V should have been on
duty to unveil the Memorial but he was seriously ill so Queen Mary took over, the first time she had
taken such a role.

She and Alfred had married in 1902 and lived in Earl Road, with her mother Sarah Pitman, who
was also a widow, from Newport and her brother, Stanley George Pitman, who was then 24 and an
insurance clerk.
It is not known whether Frank Alfred Cook’s body was ever recovered.
