(Defence of Antwerp) In 1914 they took part in the defence of Antwerp and in 1915, after a lengthy period of refit and training (scattered in various locations and still short of many of the units that ordinarily made up the establishment of a division), the Division moved to Egypt, preparatory to the Gallipoli campaign. Although consistently smaller than both the RN and the RNVR (three times the size of the RNR at the end of the First World War) the RNR had an exceptional war record, being awarded 12 Victoria Crosses. By the end of the Gallipoli campaign very few men with sea service remained. The Division transferred from the authority of the Admiralty to the War Office on 29th April 1916 and were redesignated as the 63rd (Royal Navy) Division on 19th July 1916. The Division moved to France, arriving in Marseilles, where it remained on the Western Front for the rest of the war. It is reasonable to assume that Vaughan took part in the Battle of Ancre – a phase of the Battles of the Somme 13-18th November 1916 and the Operations of the Ancre in January to March 1917.
