John Lennon’s last verse should have gone thus:
“Imagine total freedom—
I wonder if you can—
No need for greed or hunger
Unless you don’t plan
Imagine all the people
Live responsibly
Ooh-ooh!”
Just saw Sabali
By Nas and Damian Marley
Loved the chorus’ African melody
The space between the singer’s teeth
Rang of authenticity.
But now I’m back to Reality
Because She is my Goddess and I can’t worship fantasy
Spiritual DNA is a fallacy
Also the idea that genius’ job is to fill ‘the empty tummies’.
It’s been a while since I’ve come to grasp
Humans are animals in the vise-like clasp
Of intelligence.
Knowledge we can ignore,
But not the consequences of our ignorance
Entertainment we can adore,
But must accept the fruits of our willing subservience
We must eat every day and to that need we’re slaves
Yet we don’t live by bread alone, so we’re also vulnerable to the knaves
Who peg joy onto their cigarettes and diamond rings
Who peddle love paying actors to show us how much of it buying brings
But nobody gives you freedom;
You just have to take it.
Nobody gives you power;
You just have to make it.
To break your shackles
There’s only one person to overpower, to control
Only one person to bring under
The imperial majesty of your soul
Native Americans knew
Inside each one of us are two dogs, one good, one bad;
But we don’t feed each dog the same
Hence there’s heroes and there’s cads.
“Good and bad” is just another way
Of saying “trained and wild”
Greed is just as bad as thriftlessness
Intelligence painted in a colour too mild
Upon a heart beating steadily
Inside a human chest
Informed hearts are most successful;
Woe betide the rest.
Underlings make themselves that way
Said both Shakespeare and Gibran.
Overlords are Ozymandiases
Waiting to be forgotten in desert sands.
Realize that the true way to justice
Is to insightfully, thoroughly plan.
To imagine total responsibility
I really hope one day we can…
Then, and only then
We’ll see the rise of humane man.
