Make a monochromatic artwork like Pablo Picasso

POLLY ’ S mISSION

In the early 1900s , the artist Pablo Picasso used mainly blue in his paintings , with just little hints of green or dull yellow . This was his way of expressing sadness – blue reminds people of cold weather , icy seas , shadows , tears , and melancholic moments . Expressing your feelings with colour can help you get through hard times , just as it can help you celebrate the good times ! Your mission is to express yourself ! Pick a colour that represents your emotions today , and paint a picture with that colour . Polly is super excited for this one !
If you enjoyed learning all about woad on pages 10-11 of our Science of Colour issue , why not have a go at creating a monochromatic artwork a la Pablo Picasso ( he loved blue too )
ACTIVITY SKILLS
1 HOUR
DIFFICULTY
STEP 3 :
What are you going to make your picture about ? It could be abstract – just colour and shapes , or it could be figurative ( that means it closely resembles something in the real world ). Your subject should match your mood , unless you want to create a very interesting contrast .
STEP 4 :
If you ’ ve chosen to make a figurative artwork you might like to find a good reference picture . A black and white one will be very useful because it will show you all the tones within the image , then all you have to do is match them .
STEP 5 :
Create your picture ! You might like to start with a pencil drawing or you might be a JUMP STRAIGHT IN-type person , like me ! We want you to go for it . Make mistakes and express yourself . That ’ s what art is all about , after all .

GET STARTED

STEP 1 :
Decide on the colour of your mood . Close your eyes and think about how you ’ re feeling today . Then decide which colour best matches those feelings . It ’ s that simple .
STEP 2 : o o
YOU WILL NEED
Paper
Your choice of art materials
Decide on what materials you ’ d like to use . You might like to use paint , but did you know Picasso also used chalk , charcoal , newspapers , sand , sawdust , bicycle seats … Will you collage your picture using bits of packaging and coloured papers ? Perhaps you ’ ll use felt tips , or crayon ? It ’ s totally up to you . Just make sure you stick to the one rule – only shades of one colour can be used . If you are using paints , add black or white to get the tone you ’ re looking for .
