SWEET N SOUR STUFFED CABBAGE

INGREDIENTS :
20 cabbage leaves ( 1 large or 2 small heads ) - frozen for 24 hours
Filling :
1 onion , diced and sauted 3 lbs ground meat * 3 T onion soup mix 1 cup raw rice 3 / 4 can tomato sauce 2 eggs
Sauce :
1 onion , diced 2 T oil 2 cans tomato sauce ( plus the extra 1 / 4 can from the filling ) 2 cans water ( refill the empty cans with water ) 3 / 4 cup brown sugar 1 1 / 2 T kosher salt 2 T onion soup mix 2 T vinegar 2-3 bay leaves 1 T peppercorns 1 granny smith apple , cut into 4
* ground beef , ground dark turkey , or ground dark chicken-use a combo if you prefer . I used 1 lb of each in this recipe .
DIRECTIONS :
Defrost the cabbage for 24 hours , then separate each leaf and check for infestations . Shred the innermost leaves , Combine filling ingredients and fill the cabbage leaves .
In an 8 qt pot , saute the onion in oil and add the shredded cabbage . Add the filled cabbage leaves , then the tomato sauce , water , brown sugar , salt , onion soup mix and vinegar . In a mesh soup bag , place the bay leaves , peppercorn and apple . Add it to the pot .
Cook on low for 3-4 hours . Remove the mesh bag before serving .
