Phase 2 - Trainee Gunner
The Trainee Gunner course follows a similar timescale to Phase 1 training . Continuing beyond the basic fieldcraft and tactics learned at RAF Halton , you will be trained in infantry tactics , working up from individual skills to learning the various roles as part of a section in selected training areas . In addition , you will receive further weapon training on a variety of weapon systems , night sights and pyrotechnics , with live-firing forming a core part of the course . Further lessons in Force Protection in the Complex Air Ground Environment as well as role-related fitness training are delivered before the final part of the Trainee Gunner course .
Once the required objectives have been met , you will be sent to RAF Honington in Suffolk . Here you will work alongside Trainee Gunners from other Reserve units and also other RAF Regiment Reserve personnel on their promotion course , over 15 days of training in more advanced tactics . This culminates in a confirmatory 4 day exercise : Exercise OMEGA . Successful completion of this will earn you the right to wear the RAF Regiment shoulder badge , known as the ‘ mudguard ’, and you graduate on to Operations Flight as an RAF Regiment Gunner .
