Course Name: Writer’ s Workshop Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: ESOL 10th grade
Prerequisites: Literature and Composition I
Description: This course is only available to ESOL students who have been classified as beginning or developing learners based on their ELA standardized test performance in prior grades and / or their most recent reading inventory assessment. The course provides creative writing opportunities that allow students to develop fundamental skills designed to grow students towards proficiency in ELA domains. This course will be taken in the Fall w / Literature and Composition II taken in the Spring. Course will replace an elective spot.
Course Name: Literature and Composition II Type of Course: Core Course
Available to: 10th grade Prerequisites: Literature and Composition I( 70 %- 84 %)
Description: This course continues to develop the integrated skill set that comprises the English Language Arts discipline to ensure that students are on track to be college and work ready and focuses on the interpretation, evaluation, construction, and design of texts across genres and modes in a variety of real-world, academic, and disciplinary contexts while sustaining and building mastery of language applications and discipline-specific practices. Students will be prepared to take an End-of-Course Exam. Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
Course Name: Honors Literature and Composition II Type of Course: Core Course
Available to: 10th grade Prerequisites: H. Literature and Composition I( 85 %+)/ Teacher Rec.
Description: This is an accelerated version of the Literature and Composition II( see above) course that is designed to build students’ capacity in the literacy practices and skills that establish the groundwork for future real-world and academic communications. This course is designed to prepare students for Advanced Placement English / Language Arts courses. Students will be prepared to take an End-of-Course Exam. Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
