United Nations’ Model
I
t’s over, it is not over and
it will never be over. True,
our world is in constant
change, facing continuous cri-
ses and solutions. You have
learned in the past few weeks,
how the United Nations wor-
ks and you have also seen,
how conflicts can be solved.
Now you have a vision of
what goes on and it will pro-
bably give you a new perspec-
tive on why it is important to
study the past. Many of our
problems are not new. The
crises between England and
Spain to conquer North Ame-
rica are similar to a conflict
between the US and Iran over
weapons. Diseases that were
brought to America and sent
back to Europe and plagues
that killed million of people,
are similar to today’s AIDS.
People in the past wanted to
liberate themselves from
oppression by absolute mo-
narchs and today we have
people striving to liberate the-
mselves from dictators, like in
North Korea. Conflicts which
date from the Roman era still
have not been solved, and to-
day we still face the conflict
between the Palestinians and
the Israelis. It all connects.
That has been our purpose in
having the Model UN, to
show that problems are long
term, and that we must work
together to solve them. You
are responsible for this world
and your actions can change
what is around you. After to-
day you are invited to put the
past, the present and the fu-
ture together as one.
