REMEMBERING THE LEGACY OF RICHARD AND ROSALEE DAVISON
“ Life can be lived without music and the arts, but it will be dull and boring. They provide inspiration and foster creativity. Involvement allows us to meet other like-minded people who are involved in funding these institutions and their creative staff.”
– RICHARD AND ROSALEE’ S CHILDREN,
Mark and Sarah Davison, Joanna Davison Golden and John Davison.
In 2023, our community lost two devoted civic leaders: Richard and Rosalee Davison. Rosalee was a designer and philanthropist who was a founding member of the Walters Art Museum’ s Women’ s Committee. Richard, known as Dick by his friends and family, a former builder and developer of Mt. Royal management, served as President of the Home Builders Association and held volunteer leadership positions at the Associated Jewish Charities of Baltimore and Temple Oheb Shalom. Both shared a passionate dedication to Baltimore and the arts. And for many years, both could be found on Thursday evenings enjoying the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’ s classical concerts from the Grand Tier Box E or F( Left) or on Saturday morning sharing in Family Concerts with their grandchildren at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.
During their lifetime, Richard and Rosalee were among the BSO’ s most generous contributors to the Annual Fund. After their passing, the BSO was honored to learn that the Davison’ s had left a generous gift in their estate to support the Orchestra’ s programming in perpetuity.
The BSO’ s performances of Heroes and Heroines is dedicated to the memory of Richard and Rosalee, a testament to the incredible music and intergenerational programming that they enjoyed for so many years and that will continue thanks to their estate gift to the Baltimore Symphony Endowment Trust. When speaking with Mark and Sarah Davison, Joanna Davison Golden and John Davison about the role that music and the arts played in Richard and Rosalee’ s life and this concert dedication, they shared the following:
“ Attending BSO concerts at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall was part of the cadence of our parents’ lives for decades. They enjoyed the beautiful, melodic music along with being part of the cultural community of their beloved Baltimore. As longtime supporters of the BSO, they felt the importance of focusing their giving on music and the arts to enrich their lives and lives of the community. We are delighted that our parents considered the needs of the BSO in their estate planning, and look forward to enjoying this festive concert with family and friends.”
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra established the Legato Circle in 1992 to honor individuals who have included a charitable gift to the BSO in their long-term financial plans, securing a legacy of musical excellence. As in a legato musical line, these special designations ensure the smooth transfer of musical values from generation to generation.
