His recording contract with Ondine has resulted in a widely-praised complete Beethoven symphonies cycle , two much-acclaimed Ravel albums , a Rautavaara album and “ Americascapes ” — a hugely-admired survey of little — known American masterpieces , that won ‘ Best Recording of 2021 ’ from Presto Music and was shortlisted for a Gramophone Award . “ Americascapes 2 — American Opus ” is to be released in Fall 2024 . A cycle of Bruch symphonies with the Bamberger Symphoniker was released by CPO , to universally positive reviews .

Following a highly successful 2023 – 24 season that saw Karen debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , Gewandhausorchester Leipzig , National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin , and KBS Symphony Orchestra in Seoul , in addition to returns to the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl , Dallas Symphony , and Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra , she toured Australasia in concerts with the Singapore , Melbourne , Sydney , Tasmanian , and West Australian symphony orchestras . Irène Zandel season will bring more highly anticipated debuts with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra , Orchestra RAI Torino , Helsinki , Oslo , and Warsaw Philharmonic orchestras . Karen will also return this season to the Indianapolis , Baltimore , Colorado , Kansas City , Montreal , and Toronto Symphony Orchestras , and to the NAC Orchestra in Ottawa .
Karen is committed to commissioning new repertoire , and has given the U . S . premieres of Samy Moussa ’ s Violin Concerto Adrano , Matthias Pintscher ’ s Concerto No . 2 Mar ’ eh , and most recently Xi Wang ’ s YEAR 2020 : Concerto for Violin , Trumpet and Orchestra with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fabio Luisi .
Born in Tokyo , Karen began her musical career in Montréal and New York ; she studied under the legendary pedagogue Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School before continuing her studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and New England Conservatory with Mauricio Fuks and Donald Weilerstein respectively . She also studied privately for a formative period in Vienna with Heinrich Schiff .

Zhou Tian ( pronounced JOH TEE-en ) hails from Hangzhou , not far southwest of Shanghai . He grew up when China was increasingly engaging with the Western musical tradition . Embracing this international spirit , he pursued his advanced musical education in the United States , at the Curtis Institute of Music , The Juilliard School , and
University of Southern California , where he earned the Doctoral of Musical Arts degree . Since 2016 he has taught as professor of composition at Michigan State University College of Music . He held posts as composer in residence at Music in the Loft ( a Chicago chamber music incentive ) the Green Bay ( Wisconsin ) Symphony , the Reno ( Nevada ) Symphony , Tianjin Juilliard School , and the Shanghai Symphony , where he was the second composer to hold that title in the ensemble ’ s 140-year history . In 2018 , the Cincinnati Symphony ’ s recording of his Concerto for Orchestra was nominated for a GRAMMY award for Best Contemporary Classical Composition , the first time a Chinese-born
composer was so honored . In 2019 , he was celebrated as the Beijing Music Festival ’ s Artist of the Year , and in 2022 he became the first Asian-American winner of the Sousa-ABA-Ostwald Award from the American Bandmasters Association and the John Philip Sousa Foundation , for his Sinfonia . He has written music for film and dance , and his jazz-inspired works have received honors from the Julius Hemphill International Jazz Composition Awards and the Henri Mancini Institute . His score for Eternal Beloved was widely praised when that feature film was unveiled at the 2009 Shanghai International Film Festival .
