THE BALTIMORE SYMPHONY
ORCHESTRA has long been invested in the future of symphonic music : in the concert hall , in the classroom , and in local communities . Last year alone , the BSO estimates to have engaged 37,777 students of all ages through its growing education programs . For the 2024 – 25 season , new and expanding partnerships with school districts and individual education institutions support more students in their musical journeys across the State of Maryland .
More transformative programs for Terps
In 2023 , the BSO launched its residency with the University of Maryland , presenting three concerts at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center . The concerts brought new audiences to the BSO , with many University of Maryland students ( nicknamed Terps ) engaging with the Orchestra for the first time .
Dedicated opportunities for students at UMD ’ s School of Music and collaborative programming in greater Prince George ’ s County were equally important founding elements of the partnership . This season , the Orchestra returns to The Clarice for three programs , and education and community activity is running at full force .
UMD music students joined the BSO for a side-by-side rehearsal of Sibelius ’ Fifth Symphony last November on stage at the Meyerhoff . Led by Music Director Jonathon Heyward , the rehearsal presented an invaluable opportunity to observe how professional musicians approach such a monumental work . The students had already been hard at work
