From the President

AS WE EMBARK ON Jonathon Heyward ’ s second year as Music Director , we are thrilled to welcome you to the opening concerts of our 2024 – 25 season .
This past summer , we celebrated many important BSO milestones . The Orchestra traveled a combined 1,538 miles across the state for the third year of our Music for Maryland Tour , harnessing the power of music to bring communities together . We also launched SummerFest experiences at the Meyerhoff . You can read more about our summer concerts on page 4 .
On September 18 , Jonathon returned to take the podium at Morgan State University for the first of three Symphony in the City concerts , free to all concertgoers . This series , and our regular performances on traditional and new stages , underscore our and Jonathon ’ s personal commitment to being a symphony for all .
Our Season Opening Celebrations with Yo-Yo Ma , which included young musicians from BSO OrchKids and the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras , marked our first sold-out Gala concerts since the pandemic and the Orchestra ’ s most successful fundraiser in many years . To all our attendees and sponsors , thank you !
The season ahead promises a rich array of exciting musical experiences : a month-long celebration of jazz in November culminating with a special tribute to Duke Ellington ; two world-premieres featuring commissions by our 2024 – 25 Composer in Residence James Lee III , inspired by the unique sounds of our Orchestra ; and the first installment of a multi-year opera initiative beginning with Verdi ’ s Aida with soprano Angel Blue . The highlights are abundant , and I can ’ t wait to share in the magic of your Baltimore Symphony Orchestra , in a season that celebrates how music resonates with everyone . Hear more about what excites Jonathon about the musical journey ahead on page 14 .
As we look forward to all that the season will hold , we extend our deepest gratitude to our supporters , donors , patrons , and subscribers . Your support enables us to continue delivering exceptional music . We can ’ t wait to see you again soon .
