Juanjo Mena
Juanjo Mena began his conducting career as Artistic Director of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra . His uncommon talent was soon recognized internationally ; in 2011 he was named Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic which he led for seven seasons , his tenure featuring tours of Europe and Asia , annual televised BBC Proms concerts , “ thrilling ” ( The Guardian ) performances of Bruckner Symphonies , and set new standards for the interpretation of Spanish and South American repertoire . He held the position of Principal Conductor of the Cincinnati May Festival , served by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra , until 2023 , reinvigorating the Festival ’ s repertoire with previously unheard music and new commissions , and expanding its audience in demographic reach .
Mena has conducted most of the leading orchestras across Europe and North America . His 2024-25 season includes returns to the Berlin Philharmonic , New York Philharmonic , Baltimore Symphony , Dallas Symphony , NHK Symphony and the Spanish National Orchestra .
