Introduction

Thanksgiving holds a special place in my heart . It ’ s a time when we pause , express gratitude for our blessings , and come together with cherished family and friends . This year , I ’ m especially thankful for having completed a significant inaugural year as AJC CEO , a journey that has been vital as we ’ ve worked to strengthen Jewish communities , Israel , and promote interfaith understanding worldwide .
As we gather around the table this Thanksgiving , I ’ m also grateful to share with you the 22nd annual edition of AJC ’ s America ’ s Table . The first edition of America ’ s Table emerged in the wake of the tragic events of September 11 , 2001 . At that trying time in our nation ’ s history , we recognized the need to come together and demonstrate that in the face of adversity , we draw strength and comfort from our shared solidarity . America , after all , was built by immigrants of various faiths , united in their search for a better life . For the past 22 years , America ’ s Table has given us the opportunity to reflect on our nation ’ s journey and the vital importance of understanding each other ’ s stories to build bridges of unity .
And now , during this painful time for Israel and the Jewish people , amid a war between Israel and Hamas , and heightened antisemitism worldwide , it is even more essential we come together . We stand with Israel , and we stand with each other . The horrific attack waged on Israel on October 7 was Israel ’ s September 11 . This war against Hamas is the fight between evil and civilization . More than 1400 Israelis , from all faiths , including over 259 foreign nationals , were brutally murdered by Hamas , a terror organization , and over 230 innocent people , including the elderly , babies , and children , were taken hostage in Gaza . Our hearts ache for the families of all those affected and for the innocent Palestinians who suffer under Hamas ’ brutality . We pray the hostages are returned to their families safely and we pray for peace .
The strength and unity I ’ ve seen in our community will propel us forward . Despite the challenges our communities face , we return to our tables this Thanksgiving with gratitude for the gift of life , the blessing of each other ’ s presence , and the democracy and freedoms our nation bestows upon its citizens . I extend an invitation to all of you to join AJC in reading America ’ s Table during your Thanksgiving gatherings . Let us all recommit to celebrating the vibrant tapestry of diversity that defines our great nation .
With heartfelt gratitude , Ted Deutch CEO , American Jewish Committee ( AJC )
