summer with the symphony

THIS SUMMER ,

the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra ( BSO ) continued its efforts to bring the joy of music beyond our concert halls . Beginning with a special summer 2023 announcement attended by Maryland Governor Wes Moore and First Lady Dawn Flythe Moore , Baltimore City Mayor Brandon Scott , Baltimore County Executive Johnny “ O ” Olszewski , Jr ., and Howard County Executive Calvin Ball , July and August marked nearly eight wonderful weeks filled with the harmonious blend of music and community support .

Meyerhoff and Rheda Becker Community Performances ( read more on page 37 ), the annual Star-Spangled Spectacular and Celebrations . Thankfully , the weather cleared , and performances followed at Rash Field Park on July 4 and Boordy Vineyards on July 6 . The program , conducted by Sameer Patel , was a vibrant celebration of originality and independence , featuring patriotic favorites and spirited classics by iconic composers such as
George Gershwin , Leonard Bernstein , Aaron Copland , and John Williams . A special highlight of the evening was the collaboration with BSO Artistic Partner and hip-hop spoken word artist Wordsmith , who brought a fresh perspective to his composition , “ Made in America .” The Rash Field concert was a collaborative effort with the Waterfront Partnership and the City of Baltimore , symbolizing the power of partnership in creating memorable musical experiences .
Launched in summer 2022 , the Music for Maryland Tour embarked on its second season this year , continuing its mission to bring the BSO to all 23 counties of Maryland and Baltimore City . This ambitious
