FROM THE PRESIDENT

A lready , the 2023 – 23 season has been one full of firsts including a New Year ’ s Eve Fusion concert accompanied by a memorable after-party , a Lunar New Year concert that celebrated various Asian cultures and artistry , and a collaboration between members of the Orchestra and the legendary rock band , the Eagles , at the recently reopened CFG Bank Arena . In addition to many firsts , we have also experienced splendid returns , like the Allegro Kitchen reopening at The Music Center at Strathmore , giving our Montgomery County audiences a more robust pre-concert experience .

As we look out to the final months of the season , we excitedly welcome back to the Meyerhoff and Strathmore stages our Music Director Designate , Jonathon Heyward , who will be taking the podium in not one but two programs alongside young talented soloists . These May BSO concerts are on the heels of Jonathon ’ s debut with the New York Philharmonic that took place at the end of April ! We ’ re so thrilled to know that classical music ’ s rising star will soon call Baltimore “ home ”. We encourage you to attend one , if not both , of these thrilling programs : “ Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto ” May 4 – 7 and “ The Pathétique Symphony ” May 19 – 21 .
In addition to the final subscription concerts of the 2022 – 23 season , our summer programs will bring back our Star-Spangled Celebrations which remain a longstanding BSO tradition and crowd favorite . The coming months also welcome the return of our Music for Maryland Tour , in which the Orchestra will complete the second leg of a three summer tour of every jurisdiction in Maryland . We ’ re looking forward to bringing unique programming to each of this year ’ s counties and connecting more people to the BSO along the way .

As we continue to make our programming more welcoming , none of this is possible without our generous supporters who help us make transformative , world-class music accessible , affordable — and sometimes free — in two concert homes , the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and The Music Center at Strathmore , as well as in schools and communities across the entire state of Maryland . We thank you and appreciate your unwavering dedication to music education and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra . I ’ d like to extend a very special thank you to Music Director Laureate & OrchKids Founder , Marin Alsop for a generous donation of loaned instruments and bows from her family ’ s collection . We recently had the opportunity to hold a special Ruth and Lamar Alsop Chamber Music Concert to honor the Alsop family legacy , and are incredibly grateful for her continued investment in the Orchestra .
This season has laid the groundwork for a historic 2023 – 24 season . We look forward to taking many of this season ’ s innovative programs with us into our new journey , along with many exciting programmatic introductions and inclusions , under the artistic direction of Jonathon Heyward as Music Director .
