Industry Overview continued

Exports over the past 10 years have continued to grow and are now shipped to more than 50 countries around the world . The proliferation of the Australian almond brand has been the result of a co-ordinated industry led marketing campaign on behalf of all marketers and processors that has continued to gain ground in new and emerging markets while building on the demand already gained in more traditional destinations .
Free trade agreements negotiated by the Federal Government have also played a significant part in export gains . The growth of sales in China is testament to the value of zero tariff agreements , while the doubling of sales to India emphasised the value of the AI-ECTA agreement that halved almond tariffs for Australian almonds into India . These have been game-changing advantages in a highly competitive market .
Quality and food safety remain key elements in the ever-increasing worldwide demand for Australian almonds . This aspect is addressed through on-farm management practices , biosecurity and quarantine , and development and implementation of industry quality standards and testing programs . Almost all processors have now installed x-ray sorting technology that helps identify pinholes or hard to identify imperfections through more traditional sorting equipment .
The industry has also recognised the need to fortify its global credentials as sustainable growers and processors . Work to capture data around carbon , water efficiency and chemical use has begun in order to formalise these key areas of concern by consumers and identify opportunities for self improvement .
