The BSO ’ s Rachmaninoff Festival
A celebration of one of classical music ’ s most highly regarded pianists , the Rachmaninoff Festival is in of honor Sergei Rachmaninoff ’ s 150 th birthday . The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra , like many orchestras around the world , celebrates the life and legacy of the triple-threat musician . As a pianist , conductor , and composer , the depth of Rachmaninoff ’ s musicianship is remarkably profound .
The BSO ’ s Rachmaninoff Festival spans four weeks of programs from March through May . We begin at the National
Cathedral in a performance with the Cathedral Choral Society of the composer ’ s The Isle of the Dead and The Bells . Back on the BSO ’ s subscription calendar , Festival highlights include Rachmaninoff ’ s Symphony No 2 , Symphonic Dances , and Piano Concerto No . 3 performed by Olga Kern , the Russian pianist with family ties to the composer and the winner at 17 of the prestigious Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition . Each week , special pre-concert and standalone events and conversations will bring more context to Rachmaninoff ’ s life and works .
