By means of the design process and the project result , the research question “ How does the vacant building at the Kohlplatz 22 in Eschen have to be transformed while preserving the historical substance and what functions should it fulfil so that it becomes a meeting and exchange place for the building culture and for the regional community ?” was tried to be answered . Therefore , sketches , plans , models , and collages were used in order to achieve a result . However , due to the comprehensive design process in this studio , an answer to the question was detected . The existing house is a body of knowledge , therefore analysing and researching on the building and its context builds the foundation for the project . Creating an inventory of the Schuhmacher ’ s house consisting of images , plans and model , is essential . Especially , the historical development and the experiences as well as the memories of former residents and neighbours are to be considered . The knowledge generated from the analysis is to be applied into the design process .
The implementation of a building culture centre begins with analysing its title and each word separately . The results are three words “ community , creating and intersection ”, which are the basis for the concept . Afterwards , the local building culture , which dominates the purpose of this building culture , is identified in the form of local settlement development . The building stands at the interface between the industrial area of Eschen and the large undeveloped area in the middle of the settlement area . Therefore , the project deals with the contextual situation , which is marked by contrasts in an appropriate way and acts differently depending on the orientation of the Schuhmacher ’ s building and its surroundings . The definition of the local building culture already predefines the requirements of the new project . Implementing spaces for other community events , like exhibitions and concerts , increases the attractivity of the project and enables an intersection between building culture and citizens , which are

not primarily interested in this topic . Additionally , the project has a higher usability and flexibility , which leads to more sustainability . However , the room programme is created out of the existing use of the Schuhmacher ’ s building . The result is a very public building which is accessible for everyone , especially for citizens . The rooms for permanent exhibition about building culture are placed in the former living part of the Schuhmacher ’ s building , because these rooms have a direct view on the surroundings . The room and uses for the local community consist of an activity room , a café and vegetable garden , which is maintained by the citizens themselves . The potential of the southwest oriented field behind the building is used as a green outdoor space . A workshop and a concert in the shape of pavilions increases the usability and the attractivity of the exterior space . The community life of the building is supported by synergies with other cultural institutions of Eschen , for instance the music school , which could use the garden space for concerts . Nevertheless , in order to implement all of the just mentioned functions under one roof , an extension is needed . Therefore , the stable undergoes an expansion . The extension of the stable increases the functional capacity of the building and strengthens the reinterpreted passage . Reusing the old thoroughfare of the stable as a new passage creates a historical atmosphere . Additionally , the stable is coated with an insulated layer , whereby the barn can be used during all seasons , which also increases the usability . As a result , the stable is transformed into a mixed-use space , which can be used for building culture and community events . Consequently , the stable is the new hub of the building .
The relation between old and new elements is very important for the preservation of the historical substance of the Schuhmacher ’ s building . Therefore , the new wooden frame construction is based on the existing grid of the barn . At the same time , the new elements are clearly distinguishable from the existing structure . In contrast to the dark wooden constructions , blond timber

is used for the façade battens , interior panels and the static system of the extension . This attitude is also visible on the roofing . Furthermore , light-coloured tiles are used on the new roof , which differ from the existing dark tiles .
There is one important point for the future of this project which needs to be taken into account . The large field behind the Schuhmacher ’ s building has a big impact on the attractivity and the atmosphere of the southwest oriented garden space of the project . However , the giant green area is already marked as building land . Nevertheless , due to the missing infrastructure , like streets , it will take decades until this area will be full of buildings . However , this topic should be further analysed and implanted in the further building process . For the current project phase , the significance can be neglected .
