This project deals with reinterpreting the vacant Schuhmacher ’ s house in Eschen . This old structure is seen as a body of knowledge . Therefore , the analysis of the vacancy plays an important role and has influenced the design progress from the beginning . On the foundation of the historical stories , the house is transformed into a building culture centre , a place for intensive exchange on the local culture of settlement development . The preservation of the authentic and historical spirit is of significance for this project . Hence , the subsequent research question was formulated :
„ How does the vacant building at the Kohlplatz 22 in Eschen have to be transformed while preserving the historical substance and what functions should it fulfil so that it becomes a meeting and exchange place for the building culture and for the regional community ?”
The design was founded on intensive research , the inventory of plans , models and photos as well as on a detailed observation of the context itself . The result is a building culture centre , a place which provides spaces for regional events while at the same time being a location which enables exchange between the citizens in regard to the settlement development . The careful treatment of the existing structure and an extension of the barn allows visitors to experience the historical as well as the new face of the building . In the proposal , the extended stable works as the heart of the building . Simultaneously , the large green garden in the backyard serves as a multifunctional space and cultivates the outdoor area of the Schumacher ’ s building . Through the transformation of this building , the history of the building can be preserved while creating something new .
