The history of the castle dates back to a Neolithic settlement in 4500 BC . Until the romans arrived in 500 – 100 BC and used the castle for military and built up a castell , the castle hill was used as a settlement . With the Christianisation of the region , a chapel ( St . Donatus ) was built on the hill , along with a cemetery ( Burgmeier and Mayr 2011 ). In the 12th century the first medieval castle was built , which was conquered and expanded many times – till it fell into a ruin and was used as a quarry ( Herrmann 2007-2013 , pp . 59 – 67 ). In the 20th century the whole structure was rebuilt and upcycled by the architect and artisan Egon Rheinberger from Vaduz ( POESCHEL 1950 ). However , Castle Gutenberg is not the only example of upcycling in this region . From 1907 to 1914 the ruin of the Castle Vaduz has become a multifunctional castle , as it was modernized and reconstructed for the reigning Prince Johann II of Liechtenstein ( Stockhammer and Koralek 2020 ).
