New Lakeview Hospital breaks ground
Construction on a new expansion of Lakeview Hospital, one of the oldest hospitals in the state, began, as the hospital started a $ 400 million site expansion off Highway 36 and Manning Avenue.
The hospital has been serving the St. Croix Valleys since 1880, and was originally known as the“ Stillwater City Hospital” that was begun by 12 women in a two-story building on North Fourth Street. A new facility was built at Greenly and Anderson in 1892 for $ 7,500, and in 1919, the hospital’ s ownership and operation was turned over to the city and Washington County, and was changed to Lakeview Memorial Hospital. It had a capacity of 52 beds and 10 bassinets.
That hospital had expansions and renovations in 1994, 2000, and merged with Health Partners in 2011. Most recently, the hospital added a new EMS service building off Highway 36 at Osgood Avenue in 2021.
The six-story, 400,000 square-foot facility will include an outpatient cancer center, a cardiac center, orthopedics clinic, and urgent care services including a full Emergency Room.

Site development will preserve six acres of wetlands and will include 1.5 miles of trails with connections to the regional trail system. Elevator shafts and structural steel are currently rising as vertical construction progresses. The hospital is expected to open to patients in early 2028.
