Radon enters from the soil beneath the foundation, so concentrations are highest in the lowest lived-in level and decrease as you move up through the house. That geography matters more for children than for adults, because of how families use their space.
Finished basements become playrooms, homework spaces, and teen bedrooms. Ground-floor bedrooms in ranch-style homes, which are common across Middle Tennessee, sit directly on the slab. Crawlspace homes can move soil gas up through the floor system into rooms that feel entirely ordinary. In each case, the room a child spends the most hours in is often the room with the highest reading.
If your home has a basement that has been finished or is used regularly, that is where the test monitor belongs. Testing the main floor of a home whose family lives in the basement produces a number that understates the actual exposure.
How to Test Without Turning It Into a Project
The testing process is genuinely simple, and it is worth resisting the urge to overcomplicate it.
Place the test in the lowest level your family regularly uses, not an unfinished storage basement nobody enters. Keep windows and exterior doors closed during the test window beyond normal entry and exit. Position the device away from drafts, exterior walls, and direct sunlight, at roughly breathing height. Then live normally for the duration.
