The Buffalo Island Central Mustangs are locked in for an exciting season of golf. Coach Andrew McFarlin returns a plethora of experience to his team. He feels that he has a very solid group. The team is led by senior Cord Kirby.“ He wants to win every match that he is in,” said Coach McFarlin.“ He hits it a long way and is really good around the greens. If he plays smart, I expect him to be at the top of each match that we play. Watch for his name this year in matches and the district and state tournament.“ The Mustangs have sophomore Caleb Petznick who is in eaten up with the game.“ He plays a lot of golf on his own time and wants to get better each match. He is really good around the greens. He has a lot of potential for this year and upcoming years.” Junior Jake Hurst is another solid option for Coach McFarlin.“ He is good 150 yards and in. Once he gets his distances dialed in, I expect to see him in the mix as well. If he keeps working, our team will be able to compete in the district and state tournament.” Four additional seniors will compete for one of the starting jobs in: Sypher Sherrod, Weston Taylor, Cayden Davis, and Braxton Littlefield.“ Sherrod is good around the greens. Taylor is good off the tee boxes. They all need to continue to put in more time on the course and will end up being good.” Another returning player is junior Nash Decker.“ Decker has gotten a lot better since last year. If he keeps putting in the time, he will compete for those top four spots.” Junior Tysn Sipes and freshman Kayden Holt round out the boys’ side in golf. The Lady Mustangs return two seniors and three juniors. The two seniors are Anistyn Bryeans and Scout Lyerly.“ Bryeans is a competitor and wants to win every single match. If she keeps working and getting better, I would not be surprised if she is at the top in district and state. Lyerly practices all the time and loves the game. She wants to be the best in each match. She has improved so much in two years’ time. If she keeps working, she will play a big part in the district and state tournament.” The trio of juniors include: Aubrey Clayton, Marlee Pearson and Avery Davis. Clayton is a raw golfer. If she would practice and put in the time, she could be really good. She is an athlete, she can pick up anything really fast and be good at it. Pearson and Davis practice all the time and love the game. If they keep that up, they will be really good one day.” Coach McFarlin likes his chances this season.“ I hope to see us at the top of the district tournament in both boys and girls. They are out there on their own time practicing and playing with each other when they can. Both teams have improved a lot since last year and are improving every single match that we play. I can see both teams competing and having a chance in the state tournament at Diamond Head this year.”
