For the first time since 2017, Hopkins / St. Louis Park won a section game last February, downing Bloomington Jefferson 4-2 before falling to eventual state champion Edina 9-1 in the Section 6AA semifinals.
Fast forward to the 2025- 26 campaign and the Royals return several contributors, including senior defenseman Rayna Stecklein, who scored twice in the third period against Jefferson, finishing the season with 17 points and senior forward Lucy Johnson, who produced 25 points in 27 games.
Not only are Stecklein and Johnson back on the ice but the two are captains joined by experienced veterans Adrienne Deguilio and Kayci Helstrom.
The Royals had 10 skaters tally at least 10 points and 16 skaters picked up at least one varsity point along the way for a club that had 12 wins and received the No. 4 seed in arguably the toughest section in the state, Section 6AA, with the likes of perennial powers Edina, Benilde-St. Margaret’ s and Wayzata, alongside rising programs Bloomington Jefferson and Armstrong / Cooper.
Johnson, who enters her fifth season of varsity hockey, is the top returning scorer, tallying a team-high 14 assists, while the Royals return seven of the top nine scorers on what is still a relatively young squad.

Senior defenseman Rayna Stecklein( 16) of the Hopkins / St. Louis Park girls hockey team tangles with Edina skaters Audrey Davis( 14) and Cate McCoy( 8) in an early-season game at Minnetonka Ice Arena.
Johnson has 66 points across 105 games in her prep career.
Juniors Ella Koethe had 23 points, Sydney Schwartzentruber had 19 points, and Lianna Hess had 10 points. Sophomore defenseman Amelia Harmston added 13 assists, freshman Louisa Beach added 14 points( 8 goals), sophomore Cassidy Voigt had 10 points and Helstrom also had 10 points.
Deguilio is another experienced defender to help protect the goal while contributing to the attack from the blue line. She had 15 points on 11 goals as a sophomore in 2023-24 and eight points in 26 games as a freshman in 2022-23.
A big question mark coming into the season is who will step up to fill the void at the top of the scoresheet after sophomore standout Hazel Schenkelberg transferred to Edina.
Schenkelberg scored 39 goals and 19 assists over 52 games over the previous two campaigns with the Royals.
Look for Johnson, Schwartzentruber and Stecklein along with underclassmen like Beach, Voigt, Paige Johnson and Sophia Enslin to carry the scoring load.
Her 22 points in 2023-24 were third-best on the roster behind Johnson and since-graduated Avery
Shaw, who finished with 27 and 24 points, respectively, to lead the team.
Sophomore goaltender Harper Hatch split duties last season with since-graduated Helen Sautter, posting a 4-6-0 record with a 2.84 goals against average and. 859 save percentage in 2024-25.
Look for Hatch to serve as the primary netminder this season, while sophomore Elin Magnuson and freshman Ella Davenport will find their way into varsity games as the season progresses.
The Royals have several program alums playing at the next level in college including Bryn Etzell and
