Columbus City Council eying radon legislation after Dispatch reporting

by The Columbus Dispatch December 26, 2025
Columbus City Council will pursue legislation on radon in the New Year in response to a Dispatch investigation on the deadly gas.
Radon, an odorless, colorless gas known as the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers, is thought to be at dangerous levels in at least 50 % of Ohio homes. Franklin County and neighboring Licking County have some of the highest radon levels in the state and the country, The Dispatch’ s Invisible Killer investigation found.
Councilmember Melissa Green praised The Dispatch’ s reporting and said it made clear that more needs to be done to protect Ohioans from radon. Green represents the city’ s 6th District, which covers much of the West Side.
“ We are in the very early stages of exploring legislation right now,” Green said.“ We definitely want to be responsive to the things that we’ re learning, and now is a really great time in large part because of the focus that’ s been put on this because of the reporting.”
In its“ Invisible Killer” investigation, The Dispatch found federal, state and local policymakers have for decades failed to protect Ohioans from the gas. Few laws are on the books in Ohio when it comes to radon, which many people don’ t learn about unless they buy a home.
