Punjabi comm munity comes together to Evict Radon from their homes

Calgary is considered a“ hotbed” for higher levels of radon and have seen some of the highest levels in Canadaa.
Calgary sits on sedimentary bedrock and soil that is naturally rich in uranium, whichh breaks down to produce radon. Pair that with a cold climate( homes are naturally closed to keep out the damaging elements
), modern home construction( larger footprint, better sealed, and the stack effect from their height) – Calgary leads in population growth across Canadaa with over 20,000 new housing starts every year. Calgary is a city of new builds and expansion. A city always looking to the future.
In Calgary over 10,0000 homes have been tested for radon but the Northeast communities in Calgary which are the hub of the Punjabi community little testing or information about radon has occurred.
Unmasking the Reality of Lung Cancer and the AMBE society of Calgary through the leadership of Kaveeta Prasad; executive assistant for Unmasking came together for a community event to raise awareness about radon, getting test kits in the hands of people in the community and supporting the Evict Radon National Study, Early Screening for Lung Cancer and the
PROPEL project throughh the Glans‐Look Research Initiative.
The Punjabi community is vibrant close‐knit community and very supportive of each other, many with multi generations living in the same home. Many in new builds or homes under 10 years old! We were able to give 20 test kits away to the close to 100 who attended even with the bad weather and roads
, with a promise of 300 more kits to be given out from community leaders.
Working together we brought together experts, community leaders, local community media and politicians for an afternoon of sharing information and education. It was the perfect match and the right time
