Simple ways to save on fuel this winter
This winter, rising fuel costs across our villages are putting added pressure on household budgets.
We know our people have always found ways to make things last and stretch what we have. In that same spirit, we’ ve gathered a few practical tips to help keep your home warm and costs a little lower this winter. Think of these as one more tool to have on hand alongside the knowledge shared within your own family. |
One thing to know about PCE If you receive Power Cost Equalization( PCE), the adjusted rate applies to the first 750 kWh you use each month. Electric heat sources, heat tape, and heat trace can quickly push you past that limit, causing your bill to rise significantly. Keeping an eye on your electricity use throughout the month can make a real difference. |
More help is on the way We’ re working on a broader effort to help residential customers better understand and manage their energy use and hope to roll out a program this winter that includes a home energy calculator. The home energy calculator will help explain high electric bills and identify ways to reduce costs, as well as practical tips for capturing that savings. |
In addition to being watchful in how you use energy and practicing conservation where it makes sense, the Low Income Heating Assistance Program( LIHEAP) is one way to get direct financial assistance. Funding is limited so don’ t wait to submit your application. Swing by the local NANA office for more information. |
Here are some tips to help you save on home heating costs this winter
Watch your electric heat use Space heaters, heat tape, and heat trace use a lot of power and can quickly push you over the 750 kWh monthly PCE subsidy limit. If you rely on electric heat, monitor your usage throughout the month.
Turn down the thermostat. Lower it a few degrees while sleeping or away, and wear an extra layer at home. Small changes can save fuel over a long winter.
Seal the cold out
Older homes and long winters make a hard match. Small gaps let out the heat you ' re paying for.
Seal drafts around doors and windows. Weatherstripping or caulk can help keep warm air in and is relatively inexpensive.
Cover windows for winter. Clear plastic film adds an extra layer of insulation while still letting in natural light.
Block cold air under doors. Use a rolled towel or draft stopper along exterior doors on especially cold days.
Caring for our homes is one way we care for our families. We hope these tips help make the season a little easier. As our work with NWALT continues, we’ ll share more tools and guidance based on real data from homes in our region.
