2026 Summer Internship Program

This summer, Akima hosted its 20th cohort of shareholder summer interns. The annual shareholder internship program, run by Mamie Karmun, Akima’ s director of Shareholder Programs, offers students professional experience and a chance to explore new possibilities after graduation.

Starting in June, seven shareholder interns joined teams in Herndon, Virginia; Suffolk, Virginia; and Anchorage, Alaska. Each learned professional and technical skills as they worked with Akima teams across the enterprise.
On weekends and after hours, interns also explored the region where they worked, including local sights and attractions.
In Herndon, where four of the interns were based, weekend outings included the National Museum of the American Indian, a Nationals baseball game, a high ropes course, a tour of the monuments, whitewater rafting, and more.
“ I’ m always amazed to see our summer interns grow in their professionalism and make a meaningful impact on their work teams, just in the span of 10 weeks,” says Mamie.
In addition to their experiences, interns also shared their cultural experience and family memories in a special Q & A video series put together to widen Akima employee knowledge of Iñupiaq culture.

Third annual Akima Management Excellence Program cohort

AMEP Program

In May, Akima hosted 16 NANA leaders for our third annual leadership development program, the Akima Management Excellence Program( AMEP), in Herndon, Virginia. This immersive, week-long experience strives to be a powerful investment in building the future leaders of the organization.

Participants, including several NANA shareholders, engaged in a comprehensive curriculum covering critical business and leadership topics— from understanding cash flow and gross margin to strengthening performance management skills and exploring leadership styles. Beyond the classroom, the week was designed to provide meaningful, real-world context and connection.
Attendees toured Washington, DC, visited two Akima customer sites( the E911 Center and the DISA J4 warehouse) and
spent time with Akima operations and Shared Services leaders. The experience also included a memorable dinner with CEO Bill Monet in DC, reinforcing the importance of executive accessibility and open dialogue.
As our CEO emphasized, this program reflects NANA ' s commitment to developing strong leaders, recognizing that these individuals are well-positioned to help move the enterprise forward. It also
highlights Akima ' s proven operational expertise as a model of success and reinforces the importance of consistency across NANA companies.
Equally important, the program creates space for these rising leaders to build lasting relationships, expand their networks, and learn from one another.
Akima is proud to be part of developing the next generation of NANA leadership.

Akima’ s Commitment to Veterans

Veterans have long been an important part of Akima’ s workforce, and today, they make up 32 percent of Akima’ s employees. That metric reflects our commitment to creating meaningful career opportunities for those who have served our country, while also strengthening the work we do for our customers. Veterans bring leadership, technical expertise, adaptability, discipline, and a strong sense of mission to Akima. Those qualities are especially valuable as we support federal government customers with some of their most important and complex missions.

That commitment continues to earn national recognition. Akima was recently honored by Disabled American Veterans( DAV) with an award for Excellence in Veteran Hiring, recognizing our efforts to make veteran employment part of the way we do business every day. Akima has also been named a Bronze Military Friendly ® Employer and a VETS Indexes 3-Star Employer. Together, these honors reflect not only how many veterans choose to build their careers with Akima, but also the programs and practices we have put in place to recruit, support, and retain members of the military community.
Akima is also expanding that commitment through new partnerships. We recently signed the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve( ESGR) Statement of Support, reinforcing our support for employees who continue to serve in the National Guard and Reserve. Akima has also joined the Military Spouse Employment Partnership( MSEP), a federal initiative connecting military spouses with employers committed to recruiting, hiring, promoting, and retaining their talent. These partnerships will help Akima reach more veterans, Guard and Reserve members, and military spouses while building an even stronger workforce to support our customers and advance Akima’ s success on behalf of NANA shareholders.
