Experienced CC squad says, bring on the hills

Senior co-captain Miles Anderson of the Edina High boys cross country team loves running in Minnesota, but he is even more excited about an early-season meet the Hornets will be running in Iowa.
“ When I was in middle school, one of the coaches invited me to come down to Iowa and watch the varsity race,” Anderson recalled.“ There was a reason they called the meet The Spartan Challenge. I noticed how many hills there are in Iowa.”
To become a statemeet hopeful in Minnesota, Anderson has become accustomed to running hills. He said that his favorite course now is Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista, one of the Twin Cities area courses with challenging hills. The Lake Conference Meet is usually held there with the Section 6AAA Meet on the same track 10-12 days later.
How does Anderson cope with hills now that he is an experienced runner?
“ Sander Ohe, one of the captains last year, shared his approach,” Anderson said.“ Turn your brain off.”
In other words, don’ t let the hills intimidate you, just run.
Ohe was known for sayings that helped everyone on the Hornet team cope with stress.
“ One thing I remember
Sander saying was,‘ We’ ve got to take some souls,’” said junior third-year varsity runner Isaak Koivula Schadow.
Koivula Schadow was actually taking some souls before he ever met Ohe.
Three years ago Koivula Schadow took the lead in the Lake Conference Middle School Meet and defeated every runner from Wayzata, Minnetonka and the other schools.
Tyler Notermann, the other co-captain this season, has always been a distance runner in track.
He was also a soccer player, but last season he followed some of his friends to the cross
