country workouts. Running began to entice him more and more, so he set the soccer cleats aside and switched to running shoes full-time.
Notermann was injured last cross country season and ran only one 5K race. He is determined to make up for lost time this season.“ A lot of the track distance runners from other schools also run cross country. I see a lot of familiar faces of guys I have lined up alongside in the past.”
On his own team, Notermann is impressed by some of the newcomers.“ We have some younger guys who can help us,” he said.
In addition to Koivula Schadow, Edina’ s junior class includes Rocco Hawthorne-Arroyo, whose running career took a huge jump on the track last spring.
Hawthrone-Arroyo fell in love with distance running as eighth-grader, when he finished third in the State Middle School Meet, one place behind his teammate, Koivula Schadow. Since that time both Edina runners have passed up the 2023 middle school state champ.
“ It’ s great having someone like Isaak to train with,” Hawthrone-Arroyo said.“ He has so much energy and he is very mature and responsible. We push each other, and a lot of times I hear him saying,‘ You can do it.’”
Koivula Schadow said his spirited outlook has been amplified by Miles Anderson’ s leadership.“ Miles is the best leader
anyone could ask for,” he said.“ He has that certain aura. Whenever you see him, he is happy to be here.”
Hawthrone-Arroyo stays motivated by checking the progress of other runners around the Lake Conference and the state. One of his rivals is Casey Nordstrom of Minnetonka, who is replacing graduated state champion Sean Fries as the Skippers’ pack leader this season.
One of the biggest challenges for Edina this season is the presence of two very strong rivals in Section 6AAA – Wayzata and Minneapolis Washburn.“ There are three really strong team in the section – those two and us,” Anderson said.“ Only two of the three will make it to state.”
Just two years ago, Edina was the state Class
AAA champion at the University of Minnesota’ s Les Bolstad Golf Course.
The Hornets had mostly seniors on that team. This year’ s varsity looks more like a mix of seniors and juniors with several younger runners bidding for their chance.
“ The team goal is always to make state,” Koivula Schadow said.
“ We’ ll show up every day, put in the miles and come to the big races ready to compete,” Hawthorne-Arroyo said.“ This can be another big year for us.”
For the state meet and sometimes for sectionals, the Hornets will break out their gold running suits.
“ When you look good, you race good,” Koivula Schadow said.
“ We save the gold for special meets,” Hawthorne-Arroyo added.
