Upholding Quality, Safety Across the City
Members of the Eden Prairie police and fire departments remain devoted to keeping the city safe.
More than 100 staff members and volunteers of the police department serve the 36-square-mile city and answer more than 40,000 calls for service annually. The department comprises three divisions: investigations, patrol, and support.
The Patrol Division includes several patrol units as well as specialized units for the airport, K-9, crime tech, field training, reserves, retail crime, traffic, SWAT, and unmanned aerial systems. The Investigations Division consists of criminal investigations, the Domestic Abuse Response Team, explorers, school and community liaisons and outreach, chaplains, and the special investigations unit. The Support Division includes records, dispatch, professional development, support operations, community service officers, animal control, licensing, and code enforcement.
A recent addition is the replacement of the department’ s mobile command center, funded by more than $ 900,000 in federal grants. The previous mobile command center was replaced after more than 24 years of service. The new unit provides technological upgrades and a larger workspace for officers.
The fire department operates four stations and employs more than 100 full- and part-time firefighters, responding to more than 4,000 emergency calls annually.
Each year, the Building Inspections Division issues approximately 7,000 permits and conducts more than 10,000 inspections, overseeing development projects valued at roughly $ 195 million. The Fire Prevention Division’ s four specialists conduct fire investigations, inspect businesses, hazardous material sites, and rental properties, and provide fire safety education to schools, businesses, and residents.
The department also manages security systems for more than 20 city facilities, supports the city’ s 911 dispatch center, and oversees the city’ s radio tower and handheld radio maintenance. In addition, it leads emergency management efforts, including the city’ s emergency alert system and the coordination of a Community Emergency Response Team composed of volunteers trained in disaster preparedness.
The police and fire departments also organize car seat safety inspections, Safety Camp, the citywide open house and the annual Night to Unite celebration.
