Art Park on National Regsiter
The Caponi Art Park in Eagan received a National Register of Historic Places designation in February 2026.
The National Register is a listing of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects considered to be worthy of preservation. This designation will assist in accessing potential new funding to help preserve and restore portions of the house, art studio, and art pieces throughout the city park without binding the city to any specific operating parameters.
By recognizing the significance of the park property and planning for its preservation, there will be efforts to preserve its cultural heritage for the benefit of future generations.
Eagan is working in partnership with Dakota County and Friends of the Mississippi River to restore and enhance nearly 40 acres of oak forest and savanna habitat within Caponi Art Park. The goal is to bring back the ecological function of the oak woodlands that were historically present before Euro-American settlement.
Resource Environmental Solutions has been contracted to remove invasive buckthorn and honeysuckle shrubs. The removal of these dense shrub layers will open up the understory of the forest to allow for the establishment of native plants. The open understory will also help in the recruitment of younger age classes of oaks, the seedlings of which need ample sunlight to grow and ensure their survival in the future forest community.
