Understanding a community’ s countries of origin and languages spoken at home helps inform the cultural and linguistic context for local health and public health systems.
In Washoe County, 14.3 % of residents were born outside the U. S., which is a lower rate than that of Nevada( 19.0 %). 3 Accordingly, Washoe County also has a smaller percentage of residents who speak a language other than English at home( see Figure 4). Most commonly, 15.7 % of county residents speak Spanish at home, which is somewhat higher than the U. S. average( 13.4 %) and lower than the Nevada average( 20.5 %).
