Catching a ride throughout Bloomington
Metro Transit operates bus services and light rail trains that can help Bloomington residents make connections to destinations near and far.
And a new on-demand service introduced in 2025 makes it easier than ever for some to reach their destination.
Traditional bus routes connect passengers in Bloomington to local destinations, such as Normandale Community College and Mall of America. Routes can also help passengers reach downtown Minneapolis, downtown St. Paul, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and Dakota County in a variety of ways.
The Metro Transit bus system has several specialized services, such as the Metro Orange Line, a bus rapid transit line that connects Burnsville to downtown Minneapolis through Bloomington.
The Metro D Line is a similar service that begins at Mall of America and runs through downtown Minneapolis to Brooklyn Center, using local roads rather than the freeway.
The Metro Red Line is a bus rapid transit line that runs south from Mall of America to the Apple Valley Transit Station.
The mall’ s transit center also provides access to the Metro Blue Line, a light rail line that stops at the airport on its way to downtown Minneapolis.
For residents within a portion of west Bloomington, Metro micro provides curbside service for any destination within its zone. The daily service may be used to schedule a ride to a Metro Transit transfer point or to any destination within the zone, such as Bloomington Civic Plaza. The service is available through an app or by calling Metro Transit to request a ride during service hours.
Metro Mobility provides curbside service throughout Bloomington for qualified riders who are unable to use regular fixed-route buses due to a disability or health condition. Metro Move offers a similar service dedicated to connecting residents to support services, jobs and community resources.
The neighboring SouthWest Transit system provides access to Eden Prairie’ s SouthWest Station through its route 686L, which stops at Mall of America and several points along American Boulevard as it travels between Eden Prairie and the airport.
Commuters who are looking for ways to ease their daily stress have options available through Commuter Services. The organization provides free carpool, public transit and bicycling resources to help commuters find alternate ways to get to work.
